About Munfordville:

Munfordville is a town located in Hart County, Kentucky. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,563. It is the county seat of Hart County.

The town was once known as Big Buffalo Crossing. The current name came from Richard Jones Munford, who donated the land for development in 1816. The Hardy family, better known later through descendent Lieutenant Governor of Kentucky James Greene Hardy who died in office in 1856, and for whom nearby Hardyville was named, played an important role in establishing the town, especially over 1816 through 1818, and continuing well into the 1840's.

The town is also known as Munfordsville.

On the morning of November 6, 2005, at approximately 4:20 AM, a tornado came from the southwest up from the Green River, and tore through the downtown area at the south end of town, traveling through the commercial district just to the north of the bridge that carries 31-W over the Green River. Over 83 structures were damaged, many severely, causing in excess of $2.5 million in damages. Fortunately, the most severe damage was to commercial property, rather than to private dwellings, and no lives were lost. Unfortunately, several historical structures dating to the mid-19th Century were severely damaged, including a 19th Century home with walls over 18-inches thick located just east of the Hart County Court House.
